Leadership and Motivation Theory Connection The Army defines leadership as influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization (Schoomaker, 2007). The leaders in an organization use leadership styles that range from Charismatic to Transformational to motivate their subordinates to execute each task at a high level. They also use individual and organizational goals to establish an emotional connection between the individual, task, and the organization. The leader’s leadership style plays a vital role in keeping an individual focused. They use their emotional intelligence to understand their personnel and work to resolve conflicts. As the leadership style†¦show more content†¦For example, if an employee expressed concerns about additional benefits such as increased salary for complex tasks and increased responsibilities. The transformational leader must process the request and think of new protocols for expanding operations that entail more employee work, thus, offering higher salary compensations. Effectiveness of Leadership style with Goal Theory The path-goal theory argues that effective leaders are those who help their followers achieve their goals. According to the theory, leaders have a responsibility to provide their followers with the information and support necessary to achieve their goals. One way to do this is by making a noticeable effort to reward the relationship by linking desirable outcomes to goal attainment (e.g., emphasizing the positive outcomes to the followers if they achieve their goals) and increasing the belief (expectancy) that their work behaviors can lead to goal attainment (e.g., by emphasizing that certain behaviors are likely to lead to goal attainment) (Martin, 2012). Leaders can clarify the paths necessary to achieve these goals by facilitating goal attainment and removing obstacles or workplace factors that might hinder the pursuit of goals.
